Belarus president promises self-repaying hotel construction projects

MINSK, 17 November (BelTA) – New hotels will be built in Belarus if the projects can recoup the investments. Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko made the relevant statement while talking to representatives of Russian regional mass media in Minsk on 17 November, BelTA has learned.

The head of state pointed out that there is a shortage of hotels in the regions instead of the country’s capital. “Hotel construction plans proceed little by little. I cannot say that hotel construction is experiencing an investment boom… We are going to build hotels but only in the regions where they will recoup the investments,” said Alexander Lukashenko.

Recoupment is also high on the list of priorities of potential investors. For instance, a hotel built by a Turkish investor opened in Ostrovets, Grodno Oblast on 16 November. The proximity to the nuclear power plant construction site and the high pace of development of Ostrovets District will allow recouping the investment rather fast, believes Alexander Lukashenko.

According to the head of state, no hotels will be built in Minsk specifically for the 2019 European Games. “We will get through this by utilizing halls of residence of university students. If we build more hotels, what are we going to do with them afterwards? We need to keep them occupied,” noted Alexander Lukashenko. For now the hotels located in Minsk are experiencing some difficulties with their occupancy rate, added the President.
