Belarus PM says new alliance with Uralkali ‘possible’

MINSK, 20 December (BelTA) – A new potash alliance with Uralkali is possible, Belarus Prime Minister Andrei Kobyakov said in an interview with Reuters.

“A new tie-up is possible, but Belarus would approach any potential deal very carefully. We do not want the situation we had in 2013 to repeat. It was not our fault that our partnership broke up. We were left on our own in 2013. We found the way out. The company operates well today. Both the potash manufacturer and the Belarusian Potash Company have found their place in the market and function independently,” Andrei Kobyakov said.

As Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko stated at the 5th All-Belarusian People’s Congress, the new Uralkali shareholders address him regularly with suggestions to resume cooperation in the potash sector. The head of state stressed that he is not against a new alliance, but on Belarus’ terms. It was noted that the creation of a potash alliance could bring good dividends in the event of the clear distribution of responsibilities of the parties and the markets.
