Mahajan praises Belarus-India mutual support on international arena

MINSK, 12 June (BelTA) – Mutual support on the international arena is a symbol of Belarus-India friendship, Sumitra Mahajan, Speaker of the Lok Sabha, the lower house of India’s Parliament, said as she met with Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko on 12 June, BelTA has learned.

“Our relations are based on many years of friendship. The support we lend each other on the international arena is, of course, a symbol and demonstration of this friendship,” Sumitra Mahajan said. At the same time, she noted that the two countries need to scale up trade and economic cooperation.

Belarus and India have similar or the same positions on the major issues of the international agenda. The countries maintain constructive cooperation in the human rights agenda of the United Nations.

India is Belarus’ biggest and most promising trading partner in South Asia. In 2017 the bilateral trade exceeded $455 million, up by nearly 12%. Belarus has a trade surplus of $161 million. In January-March the Belarusian export amounted to $95 million, up by 39.2% over the same period a year before.
