Long-range space exploration possible only via international cooperation, says cosmonaut in Minsk

MINSK, 12 December (BelTA) – Long-range flights to explore outer space will be possible only thanks to international cooperation, BelTA learned from Vladimir Aksenov, a USSR pilot cosmonaut, President of the Academy of Sciences and Arts of the Sergei Korolev Union, during the second congress of Belarusian scientists in Minsk on 12 December.

Vladimir Aksenov said: “We take joy in accomplishments of Belarusian science and believe that Belarus is at the forefront of development. All the Belarusian research projects for outer space exploration represent a contribution to the common cause. We highly appreciate them. I should note that space exploration has a uniting effect. Space exploration missions cannot be accomplished single-handedly. Cooperation of several countries is needed. Long-range flights represent the next stage in space exploration. They are impossible without joint efforts and the implementation of joint programs.”

The pilot cosmonaut also underlined the importance of the fact that the 31st international congress of the Association of Space Explorers will take place in Minsk in 2018. “Hosting such a congress in Minsk was the right decision. It is a very important event. I would definitely try to take part in it,” noted Vladimir Aksenov.

Belarus’ initiative to host an international congress of the Association of Space Explorers in Minsk in 2018 was approved by the session of the Association’s executive committee in Toulouse, France on 25-27 March 2017.

The panel session on international scientific cooperation took place as part of the second congress of Belarusian scientists on 12 December. Scientists from various countries discussed mechanisms of expanding cooperation along the most promising avenues of science advancement.

The second congress of Belarusian scientists is scheduled to take place in Minsk on 12-13 December. About 2,600 people, including foreign guests, are taking part in the event. On the first day of the congress the delegates and invited guests are working in nine panel sessions dedicated to the main directions of science development. A theme exhibition has been arranged as part of each session. The plenary session is scheduled for 13 December. A general interagency exhibition Intellectual Belarus will be opened during the plenary session. The draft strategy Science and Technologies: 2018-2040 is the key item on the agenda of the second congress of Belarusian scientists.
