Sporovsky Reserve to host scything festival in August

BREST, 24 July (BelTA) – Scythemen from Belarus and other countries will take part in the Sporovskiye Senokosy 2014 scything championship which will take place at the Sporovsky Reserve on 23 August, BelTA learned from director of the reserve Vadim Protasevich.

The Sporovsky Reserve will host the national scything competition for the 8th time. This year it will also host the 9th European scything championship. This competition will take place in Belarus for the first time. The previous editions of the European championship took place at the Biebrza National Park in Poland. The international scything competition will take place at the Sporovsky Reserve because it has unique lowland bogs. Moreover, Belarusian scythemen regularly demonstrate good results at international competitions, Vadim Protasevich said.

Participation entries shall be submitted before 10 August. According to the director of the reserve, they have already received requests from all regions of Belarus as well as from Poland and Russia. According to the rules, participants of the competition must have their own scythes and instruments. Teams of two scythemen and a captain should cut fenny grass on a 100m long and 3m wide strip of land. The best scythemen participate in the individual competition.

The festival has a diverse program. Belarus will host the first bog football competition.

The festival will also feature a fair of projects as part of the GEF Small Grants Program. It will present ten most successful projects sponsored by the fund in Belarus.

The festival will showcase performances of the best art groups in the region, namely Khmelevskiye Volotsugi, Svyatlitsa, Sporovsky Okolot and others. The festival will be crowned by the performance of the legendary Belarusian band Palats. Visitors of the festival will be able to buy souvenirs made by local artisans.

The ecological festival Sporovskiye Senokosy 2014 is organized by the Bereza District Executive Committee and the Sporovsky Reserve with the assistance of the Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Ministry, the GEF Small Grants Program.
