Golshany Castle 2013 festival to feature medieval ball

GRODNO, 21 August (BelTA) - The festival of medieval culture Golshany Castle 2013 will be held near the walls of this legendary castle in Oshmyany District on 24 August, BelTA learnt from the Ideology, Youth Affairs and Culture Department of the Oshmyany District Executive Committee.

Every year the event brings together people who like authentic music, knights tournaments, theaters, colorful fire shows, folk crafts and the atmosphere of medieval culture. Partaking in the festival this time will be music groups, artisans and poets from Belarus and Lithuania (Vilnius County).

One of the highlights of the festival will be a theatrical fancy-dress performance The Ball Hosted by Sophia of Golshany which will feature such groups as Lity Taler, Altanka, Yavaryna and dance company Flammeya. The guests will also enjoy a concert by the group PAWA, which plays authentic medieval musical instruments manufactured with the use of technologies of that time.

A knights’ camp will be located near the walls of Golshany Castle. Military and historical clubs from Grodno Oblast and Minsk are expected to attend the festival, too. The festival will include knights’ tournaments, competitions, master classes in medieval dancing and different games. Tourists will be offered an excursion of the agrotown Golshany.

This year the festival Golshany Castle will be held as part of the project Two Sides - One History and Culture. The project is held in line with the European Neighborhood and Partnership Instrument under the cross-border cooperation program Lithuania-Latvia-Belarus. The results of the joint project will be presented during the festival. This will be a collection of poetry and a guide-book under the name Historic Route Along Oshmyany Elevation.

The festival has enjoyed a massive and enduring popularity. Lots of tourists from almost every corner of Belarus and abroad come to Golshany to take part in the show. However, it is not only the festival which attracts them. Rather, they also take an opportunity to get familiar with Golshany’s rich past.

The legendary castle, which once belonged to Pawel Stefan Sapieha, is a valuable monument of the past. Many art works, legends and myths were dedicated to it.
