On 23 August, Sergei Martynov, Belarus Foreign Minister, was visiting the Republic of Latvia.
During the visit, Sergei Martynov held negotiations with the President of Latvia Valdis Zatlers, Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis, Foreign Minister Aivis Ronis and Minister of Transport Kaspars Gerhards.
The Foreign Ministers of Belarus and Latvia discussed the entire range of issues of the Belarus-Latvia cooperation, both bilateral and those relating to the international organizations. The parties focused on the prospects of Belarus-EU cooperation as well as those of Belarus and Latvia under the Eastern Partnership.
Following the talks, the two Ministers signed an intergovernmental Agreement on simplified travel of Belarus and Latvia near-border residents.
The Belarus Foreign Minister discussed essential prospects of more Belarus-Latvia political and economic cooperation with the President of Latvia Valdis Zatlers.
During the meeting with the Prime Minister of Latvia Valdis Dombrovskis, focus was given to a wider range of bilateral trade and economic issues, investment, transport, transit, energy and industrial cooperation. The parties also discussed concerted actions aimed to put together a Belarusian National exhibition and the 5th International Belarus-Latvia Investment Forum «The Baltic Region 2010», due to be held on 22–25 September 2010 in Riga.
A key issue on the agenda of Sergei Martynov and Kaspars Gerhards, Latvian Minister of Transport, who is also head of the Latvian part of the Belarus-Latvian intergovernmental commission for economic, scientific and technical cooperation was the development of transport and transit cooperation. They agreed to give impetus to the work of the Commission which is to convene again in September this year.
At the end of his stay in Latvia, Sergei Martynov visited the free port of Riga where he met the vice-mayor of Riga A.Shlesers and the chief executive of the port L.Loginov. They talked about the implementation of bilateral mutually beneficial projects relating to the Belarus transit freight.
