Exhibition opened to highlight 45th anniversary of Brest Fortress memorial

BREST, 23 September (BelTA) – An exhibition World of the Brest Fortress was opened in the Brest Fortress Defense Museum on 23 September, representatives of the Brest Fortress Memorial told BelTA.

The exhibition is timed to the 45th anniversary since the memorial was opened. The photo project is divided into a historical part and a modern part. The former relies on photos from the museum’s own stock. They were made in the 1950-1970s. The latter features works submitted for the contest A Look at the Brest Fortress that took place in July-September 2016. Photos taken by Brest residents, tourists from other cities of Belarus, Russia, and Moldova were submitted for the contest. The 32 most unusual and interesting photos are featured as part of the exhibition. Representatives of the Brest Fortress Memorial noted that these photos and the indifferent attitudes of their authors allow other visitors to see the Brest Fortress from a new angle.

A presentation of the book describing fates of the natives of Kazakhstan, who defended the Brest Fortress, also took place in the Brest Fortress Defense Museum on 23 September. The book’s author, Professor Laila Akhmetova, Doctor of History, gifted a copy of the book to the museum. Director of the Brest Fortress Memorial Grigory Bysyuk thanked the author. He noted the book represented another footprint in studying the history of the fortress and its defense in 1941.

The Brest Hero Fortress Memorial was opened on 25 September 1971. The architectural design of the memorial immortalizes memory of the legendary heroes, who defended the citadel. The memorial relies heavily on ruins of the old fortress, the places where fierce fighting took place during World War Two, and on monumental sculptures. Every year the memorial and its museums attract about 500,000 tourists from Belarus and other countries.
