Deconstruction project at the National Center for Contemporary Arts

Artist Tatyana Savik studies deconstruction as a method to mechanically divide objects and portraits into fragments in order to destroy generally accepted narratives and perception stereotypes. Some of her works are interactive: viewers are invited to take part in a postmodernist game of creating new forms and meanings and deconstructing and reconstructing works that are open systems with an infinite number of variations. The process of deconstruction is continuous and cannot be completed, therefore, by creating characters from fragments, the artist raises the problem of an identity crisis of a contemporary human being and explores the possibilities of restoring the integrity of the individual, overcoming trauma through deconstruction.

When: 9 February – 3 April
Where: National Center for Contemporary Arts of Belarus, 3 Nekrasova Street, Minsk

Mikhail Savitsky exhibition at the Great Patriotic War Museum

Striking canvases of the Numbers on the Heart cycle are the highlights of the exhibition dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Hero of Belarus, People’s Artist of the USSR and the BSSR, painter, teacher and public figure Mikhail Savitsky. He worked on this impressive cycle in 1974-1979, 1987 when he was a mature and popular artist. The contemporaries call the artist a man with an open heart and a difficult fate. He joined the Red Arm to fight the enemy during the Great Patriotic War, was captured and taken to Nazi concentration camps, including Buchenwald. The Numbers on the Heart cycle is the artist’s statement in defense of peace, an expression of anxiety for the fate of the beautiful planet and its main treasure – human being. The last time this series of paintings was exhibited was in 1979 in the Minsk Palace of Art, and even then the master expressed the wish that these paintings be exhibited at the Belarusian State Museum of the Great Patriotic War History.
