Festival of Korean culture in Minsk

Festival of Korean culture in Minsk
5 Aug 2017

Oriental melodies and dances, exotic customs, national embroidered costumes, secrets of calligraphic writing and, of course, the best national dishes… The Day of Korean Culture was held in the historical Upper Town of Minsk on 5 August to become one of the most memorable events of summer 2017.

South Korea and Belarus are located more than 7,000 kilometers away from each other. However, the two countries enjoy long-standing diplomatic relationships and maintain contacts in different sectors. Culture is the best way to learn about each other. The Day of the Korean Culture in the Minsk downtown was organized by the Association of Belarusian Koreans, the National Center of Ethnic Cultures, the Korean Embassy in Belarus and the Minsk City Hall.

The draw of the festival was the performance of the Minsk band Arirang that has been part of the Association of the Belarusian Koreans for 10 years already. The performers demonstrated the Korean percussion music Samul Nori, and also dances with knives, fans and drums. K-pop, the music genre that has become part of the modern Korean Wave Hallyu, was played during the event.

The Upper Town hosted numerous exhibition shows, master classes from the Minsk taekwondo club Vertushka, calligraphy workshops, tasting of the national cuisine, and also a variety of traditional Korean games (Yutnori, Tuho, and many more).
