Storm Axel in Belarus: snowfalls, blizzards and frosts
5 Jan 2017

The storm Axel brought biting frosts to Belarus. Immediately after the New Year holidays, the country was hit by heavy snow and gale force winds. By 5 January the temperature dropped to -16-20°C. This is not the limit of the swift Arctic invasion! According to the weather forecasts, Belarus will have to brace for -32°C, its iciest weather so far, on Christmas night.

Of course, the weather created some problems for utility services and power generating companies, transport companies and motorists, rescuers and doctors. But the Belarusian winter is unthinkable without snow and frost. Mobile facilities offering hot tea and warm clothes opened on roads and streets across the country. Volunteers help clean up snow; traffic cops help motorists in difficult situations. The outdoor skating rinks made across the country are one of the several benefits that the well-below-zero temperatures have brought.
