Belarusian transplant surgeons arranged a heartwarming celebration for their little patients. The kids who underwent organ transplant surgeries got their main prize – an opportunity to live, grow up and dream about the future.

On 27 December, the National Research Center for Organ and Tissue Transplantation arranged a Christmas party for more than 160 children and their parents, many of whom have become donors, and also moms who have given birth after a transplant surgery. They all gathered in Minsk to celebrate the holidays together with the doctors who help them successfully fight their diseases.

Since 2002, Belarusian transplant surgeons have performed more than 160 transplants in children. Oleg Rummo, the head of the National Research Center for Organ and Tissue Transplantation, said: "We have done more than 100 kidney transplants, and more than 50 liver transplant surgeries. The donors are mainly fathers or mothers. They are also heroes. It is important for us that the society understands that these are normal children, and we do this for the future of the country."

2016 was one of the most successful years for the Belarusian transplantation centers. Since the beginning of the year, surgeons have conducted 486 organ transplants. "Today we perform more than 50 transplant surgeries per 1 million residents. This is an outstanding achievement. Not more than 20 countries in the world can boast of such figures. This is 45 surgeries more than last year. This means that 45 people more got a chance at a normal, full life," Oleg Rummo said.
