Minsk Declaration adopted at OSCE PA annual session in the Belarusian capital

Minsk Declaration adopted at OSCE PA annual session in the Belarusian capital
9 Jul 2017

The OSCE Parliamentary Assembly adopted the Minsk Declaration during the 26th annual session in the Belarusian capital on 9 July.

The Minsk Declaration is based on the resolutions adopted following the discussions, and contains recommendations for national governments, parliaments and the international community on responding to the present-day challenges and threats. For example, the MPs are concerned over the existing challenges in the field of security throughout the OSCE region, including threats to cybersecurity, terrorism, protracted conflicts and the general deterioration of trust, security and cooperation.

The resolution on the situation in Eastern Europe highly critical of Belarus, Russia, and Azerbaijan was a subject of heated debate. As a result, the MPs had a separate vote on the resolution: the document was removed from the Minsk Declaration in line with the rules as it did not get a majority of the vote.

Head of the Belarusian delegation, Vice Speaker of the House of Representatives Boleslav Pirshtuk called the result of the vote a turning point in the relations of Belarus in the organization.

"It is very important that we have more and more supporters. This shows that the systemic hard work of our government is yielding results. I am grateful to our colleagues who, despite the bloc approach, showed their will and adopted an objective decision. This suggests that they share our views. They saw Belarus as an open and civilized country," Boleslav Pirshtuk said.
