Maslenitsa in Belarus

Maslenitsa in Belarus
22 Feb 2015

Belarus celebrated the famous holiday – Maslenitsa. Since times immemorial every day of this symbolic week has had its own name and has been filled with beautiful rites: Welcome Maslenitsa, Merriment (when people start congratulating each other), Feast Day (when there are more and more dainties and guests around), Mother-in-Law Evening, Daughter-in-Law Parties, Shrove Sunday… Following the established tradition the main dishes for Maslenitsa include pancakes and flapjacks, cheese and butter. Belarusians have attached special meaning to them since days of old. The pancakes symbolize the sun and bring the coming of spring closer while cheese and butter "attract" wealth… Today’s Maslenitsa is one of the favorite folk celebrations. All over Belarus merrymaking was in full swing, full of ancient rites and the burning of winter effigies, games, theatrical performances, and certainly fairs where the most delicious Maslenitsa pancakes can be tasted.
