First Christmas decorations expo opens in Minsk

First Christmas decorations expo opens in Minsk
10 Oct 2017

Belarus’ first exhibition of Christmas decorations opened at the Galleria Minsk shopping mall on 10 October. The exhibition displays about 1,000 exhibits from Andrei Begun’s collection estimated at the total of $800,000. The exposition features the Soviet classics and unusual decorations from around the world: Christmas decorations in the Faberge style, wooden statuettes from Indonesia and Congo, toys from Uganda, and even a mechanical Christmas town.

The famous collector is particularly proud of exclusive Christmas decorations with the unique history. One of such items is the Austrian-Hungarian glass bauble (exceeding 450mm in the diameter!), which decorated the Vienna Christmas Ball, one of the most prominent events in Europe in the late 19th century, and also a replica of the decoration given to Pope John Paul II as a gift and later inscribed in the Guinness Book of Records.

The exhibition 2017 also features a “subsidiary” of the real Christmas decorations factory where visitors can watch the manufacturing process and make a paper snowflake or paint a glass bauble with the help of professional artists. Attendees of master classes will learn the bas-relief pattern technique, which is used at the Minsk factory Grai, the country’s only company producing Christmas decorations.

The exhibition in the Belarusian capital will stay open through the New Year’s and Christmas holidays until 15 January 2018. Another exhibition of Christmas decorations will open in the Gomel Palace of Rumyantsevs-Paskeviches in November and will stay open there for the whole forthcoming winter season 2017-2018.
