CITIES OF BELARUS: Grodno landmarks in our summer guide
8 Aug 2018

Grodno, one of Belarus’ most important historical and cultural centers, is located on the western edge of Belarus, on a steep bank of the Neman River, at the crossroads of routes leading from Lithuania and Poland. This year the ancient city will mark its 890th anniversary. Established in 1128 as a border town-fortress, it withstood destruction and desolation of numerous wars and re-emerged as a modern oblast capital and a place where modernity meets tradition. Due to a high concentration of landmarks the city can be compared to an open-air museum. Thanks to the visa waiver introduced in October 2016, Grodno now draws in tourists from around the world.

Grodno is one of the major centers of Catholicism and Belarus’ Capital of Culture 2014. Its famous locals include Vasil Bykov who worked in the Grodnenskaya Pravda newspaper in the 1940s, novelist Vladimir Korotkevich, poets Eliza Orzeszkowa and Maxim Bogdanovich, and artist Leon Bakst who became famous after creating stage decorations for Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes.

The city that is steeped in history promises a unique experience to old time lovers. Hundreds of tourists take a stroll along the cobbled streets of the city center soaking up the incredible atmosphere of old times and enjoying a breathtaking view of the Neman River. History buffs rush to the Old Castle and the New Castle, religious tourists certainly appreciate St. Francis Xavier Cathedral (Farny Church), Sts Boris and Gleb Church (Kolozha Church), Lutheran Church, and Intercession of the Theotokos Orthodox Cathedral (or St. Basil’s Cathedral). Soviet Square (Sovetskaya Square) has become a magnet for architecture aficionados.

Our guide features the most beautiful and popular places in Grodno. However, if you get tired of the hustle and bustle of the city life and your eyes want bright colors and serene landscapes, you are invited to explore the sites and landmarks of Grodno District.
