Trade union movement described as essential for Belarus

MINSK, 19 May (BelTA) – Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko stressed utter importance of the development of the Belarusian trade unionism during a meeting with Chairman of Belarus’ Federation of Trade Unions Mikhail Orda on 19 May, BelTA has learned.

“I would like to stress it once again: I will keep paying great attention to the development of trade union movement. This is the pillar of our country and mine as a president. I carefully observe what is going on in this field,” the Belarusian leader noted.

During the meeting Alexander Lukashenko offered to review the state of affairs in Belarus’ trade union movement. “Trade unions comprise over 4 million members. This is both a party and a social movement,” the president pointed out.

“Bottom-up structural reconstruction that we have once agreed on is of great importance for me. It is crucial to know how primary trade union organizations are set up in private companies, whether the process is smooth. We have discussed sectoral trade unions at the highest level. There have been too many of them at that time. We then have set the task to unify similar sectoral trade unions,” Alexander Lukashenko noted.
