Organization of elections to municipal councils in Belarus to focus on domestic observers

Organization of elections to municipal councils in Belarus to focus on domestic observers

MINSK, 14 November (BelTA) – Domestic observers will be the main emphasis during the elections to the municipal councils of deputies, which are scheduled to take place in Belarus in February 2018. The information was released by Chairwoman of the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Belarus Lidia Yermoshina after she met with Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko on 14 November, BelTA has learned.

“Certainly, the main emphasis will be on national observers. Their numbers are always big. I think that political parties, public associations will not fail us this time either and will be rather active at organizing observation,” said Lidia Yermoshina.

The official explained that Belarus is not obligated to invite international observers to monitor elections to the municipal councils of deputies. Nevertheless, the head of state underlined that observation plays a special role. This is why Belarus will resort to the established practice and will authorize all the foreign diplomats, who are accredited in Belarus, to perform short-term observation functions.

“It is quite possible that individual organizations, which stay in touch with international structures, particularly those specializing in local self-government, will be able to invite their colleagues and partners as experts and observers for the voting days,” said the head of the Belarusian national election organization agency.
