Minsk to host ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships

MINSK, 22 February (BelTA) – Partaking in the ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships that are to take place at Minsk Arena from 27 February-4 March will be 210 athletes from 52 countries, Minsk Arena Director General and head of the Belarusian Union of Ice-Skaters Nikolai Ananyev told press conference on 22 February.

The tournament allows figure skaters under 18 and under 21 in pair skating. Over 50 journalists and a number of TV companies including from South Korea and Japan have been accredited to cover the competitions in Belarus. The championships will be broadcast in 15 countries. The panel of judges will consist of 50 judges from 29 countries.

Belarus will be represented by ice dancers Maria Polyakova and Mikhail Fomichev. Not long ago the pair took part in the European Figure Skating Championship in Sheffield (where they placed 18th), members of the Belarusian national figure skating team Viktoria Kovaleva and Yuri Belyayev (the winners of the Belarusian Figure Skating Championship), Yevgenia Tkachenko and Yuri Gulitsky (gold medalists of the 1st Winter Youth Olympic Games in Innsbruck), Pavel Ignatenko and Kristina Zakharenko (both single skating).

Qualification events will be held on 27-28 February. The official opening ceremony will start at 18h30 on 29 February. The last medal events will take place on 3 February. The closing gala concert will be held on 4 February (the beginning at 14h30).   

The organizer of the event is the Belarusian Union of Ice-Skaters.
