Minsk pays tribute to metro blast victims

MINSK, 12 April (BelTA) – On 11 April Minsk Mayor Nikolai Ladutko unveiled a memorial to perpetuate the memory of the Minsk metro blast victims, BelTA has learnt.

The ceremony was held at the entry to the Oktyabrskaya metro station.

Last September the Minsk City Hall opened a contest for the memorial design. The winner of the contest was named sculptor Konstantin Selikhanov. His composition is made of bronze, marble and granite. The 3x2.3 meter memorial was sited at the place of the temporary memory plaque. The stele features 15 waves with the names of the killed people on them. Apart from the names the memorial has only one more inscription - the date of the terror act.

The participants of the ceremony remembered the victims with a minute of silence before heading for the Church-Monument of All Saints and Innocently Killed in our Fatherland for the memorial service.

The explosion in the Minsk metro rocked the Oktyabrskaya station on 11 April 2011. The terrorist attack killed 11 people immediately, while 4 died in hospital. Over 315 people were injured.
