Addressing the guests of the festival, Deputy Prime Minister of Belarus Vladimir Potupchik emphasized that the Day of Belarusian Written Language was held for the 17th time already. Notably, Gomel Oblast hosted it for the third time (the event was held in Turov two times). “This time the ancient land of Polesie takes the center stage in the festival. This land of a remarkable history remains in the heart of everyone who has been here,” the Deputy Prime Minister said. The winners of the Book Art 2010 national competition and the national contests for the best piece of poetry, prose, drama, book review and children’s literature were awarded at the summer amphitheatre of the town. The awardees include Grigory Sokolovsky (the “Afghan Echo” collection of poems), Nikolai Chernyavksy (“Sunny Basket”, children’s literature), Anatoly Myasnikov (“100 Belarus’ Historical Figures”, book review and literary studies), Vasily Shirko (a series of essays), Mikhail Sliva (Kovalev) (“Vertual Love”, satire and humor), Irina Maslenitsyna (“Cross of Saint Euphrosyne of Polotsk”, drama), Liudmila Kebich ( the “Lover's Secrets” collection of lyrics), Alexander Sokolov (“A Flight over the Earth”, prose).

Attending the event were foreign guests, representatives of diplomatic missions accredited in Belarus, scientists and artistes, journalists and a delegation of the Union of Writers of Belarus. Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People’s Republic of China to the Republic of Belarus Lu Guicheng was in attendance, too. He said that the Day of Belarusian Written Language gave a chance to learn more about Belarus’ intangible heritage, its culture and literature. “It is the first time I have visited Gomel Oblast and this wonderful festival has impressed me much,” the diplomat said.
