Belarus suggests restoring $40bn trade to Russia

Belarus suggests restoring $40bn trade to Russia

MOSCOW, 13 June (BelTA) – Raising Belarus-Russia trade to over $40 billion should be stipulated as a strategic task. Prime Minister of Belarus Andrei Kobyakov made the statement during the session of the Council of Ministers of the Union State of Belarus and Russia on 13 June, BelTA has learned.

Andrei Kobyakov said: “Positive trends towards the restoration of economic growth in our countries were secured in 2017 and have been reflected in results of the bilateral trade. In 2017 Belarus-Russia trade rose by 23.5% to $32.4 billion. The national currencies, primarily the Russian ruble, were used to pay for over 80% of the mutual trade turnover. We would like to use only the national currencies – the Belarusian and Russian rubles – for the entire trade volume and for setting prices.”

In his words, it is now necessary to work as hard as possible in order to reinforce mutual trade growth trends. “I suggest specifying the restoration of the previous trade turnover of over $40 billion as a strategic task,” noted the prime minister.

Today’s is the first session of the Council of Ministers of the Union State of Belarus and Russia after the latest Russian president election and the appointment of the new government. “I am convinced that in addition to preserving the current level of intergovernmental relations we will be able to advance it to new heights, which meet modern requirements and challenges,” said Andrei Kobyakov.

Results of this session of the Union State Council of Ministers will be discussed during the forthcoming session of the Supreme State Council of the Union State. In view of the fact the Belarusian head of government suggested reviewing the bilateral relations not only from the point of view of stating the problems but from the point of view of working out concrete approaches to consequent actions.
