Belarus concerned about worsening situation in Ukraine

Belarus concerned about worsening situation in Ukraine

MINSK, 18 November (BelTA) – Belarus is concerned about the worsening situation tendency in Ukraine. Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko made the statement as he met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on 18 November, BelTA has learned.

“The situation around our borders, around the Union State of Belarus and Russia has been a matter of concern recently. We cannot agree with the activities pursued by Western nations at the western borders of our Union State. We cannot agree with the tendency for a worsening situation in Ukraine, not only in the regions of Donbass and Donetsk but the entire Ukraine,” noted the Belarus President.

“We hoped a lot that after the elections the situation would advance in a better direction, in the direction of stability. Unfortunately, we don’t see it,” said the Belarusian head of state.

Alexander Lukashenko said he believes that the situation around Belarus is closely related to Russia, too. “The problems are indivisible: our problems are your problems, too while your problems are our problems,” said the Belarus President. “Those include pressure on Belarus, which does not leave the Russian Federation indifferent, and naturally there is the pressure on the Russian Federation, which has enough problems as it is”.

“Therefore, this tangle of problems, which are evolving around us, primarily those concerning the ministries of foreign affairs, weighs heavily upon the situation in Belarus and naturally in Russia. They cannot but be a concern for us,” stressed the Belarusian leader.

Lukashenko met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei LavrovAlexander Lukashenko said he would like the matter to be discussed by the Belarusian and Russian sides for the sake of working out some unified stance so that the two countries could work in a concerted manner. “The problem does exist and it has to be dealt with,” added the Belarusian head of state and pointed out the importance of meetings in Minsk for the sake of working out action guidelines.

Speaking about Belarusian-Russian bilateral relations, Alexander Lukashenko stressed that there were no disquieting problems at all. “We are starting the new year virtually without problems in our relations, even minor ones. We have come to terms on all the matters,” said the Belarus President. In his opinion, if all the ministries and agencies on both sides worked the way the ministries of foreign affairs and defense do, the two countries would have no problems at all.

Alexander Lukashenko asked to express his support for President of Russia Vladimir Putin. “I see his schedule has been very busy, primarily in the difficult region in the East, both in terms of stamina and distance,” said the Belarusian leader. He also asked to convey his good wishes to Prime Minister of Russia Dmitry Medvedev.
