Address by 24,000 Belarus Poles to Poland authorities forwarded to Poland embassy

MINSK, 10 March (BelTA) – An open address sent by Belarus Poles to the President, marshals of the Senate and Sejm, the Prime Minister of Poland was handed over to the Embassy of Poland in Minsk on 10 March, Deputy Director of the National Library of Belarus Stanislav Kasperovich told BelTA.

Stanislav Kasperovich is one of the 24,000 Belarus Poles who signed the address. According to the source, the signers represent all the oblasts of Belarus. “Most of them don’t belong to any political parties, public associations and unions. They are common citizens, who hold the honor of their country dear,” remarked Stanislav Kasperovich.

Officers of the Embassy of Poland took the address and promised it would be forwarded to the addressees by diplomatic channels soon.

BelTA reported earlier that on 26 February Belarus citizens of Polish nationality compiled an open address to the Poland leadership, calling upon them to stop pursuing a discriminating policy against their compatriots. “We urge you not to divide Poles into yours and theirs. In the multinational Belarus all peoples are treated as plenipotentiary citizens of their own country regardless of nationality and faith,” reads the address. “We state that Andzelika Borys and her small circle are not authorized to represent interests of the Polish minority that live in Belarus. These people discredit themselves by breaking our country’s laws, by constant attempts to stir up conflicts among Poles”.

The address underlines that the Belarusian government has never violated and does not violate rights of national minorities, contrariwise, it works to ensure their rights are observed. “In our country all the conditions required for getting education in Polish, studying Polish, preserving and developing the historical and cultural legacy of the Polish nation have been created. All the houses of Poles in Belarus are busy with cultural and enlightenment efforts”.

Signers of the address request a meeting of representatives of the Union of Poles in Belarus with Poland officials and request to take “measures to stop the rampant lies in Polish mass media”. They request to allow the Polish general public to hear out objective information directly from the Poles themselves.
