Brest Fortress film screened at UN headquarters

UNITED NATIONS, 25 March (BelTA-TASS) - The feature film Brest Fortress was screened at the UN headquarters as part of a series of the events to mark the 70th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War.

The screening at the Dag Hammarskjold Library Auditorium was organized by the diplomatic missions of Russia and Belarus with the support of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan.

The film was made in 2010 by Russian film producer Alexander Kott and stars Andrei Merzlikin, Aleksei Kopashov, Pavel Derevyanko and Alexander Korshunov.

Belarus’ Permanent Representative to the United Nations Andrei Dapkiunas made a welcome address to those attending the screening: diplomats, UN Secretariat staff, journalists and their family members. He said that Brest Fortress is not so much about the war but about love that becomes the first casualty of any war.

"What made the fortress defenders continue fighting when the fortress was already deep behind enemy lines? Was it civic duty, discipline? The state of shock? The idealist in me says that it was love. Love for the loved ones whose lives were in danger. Love for the country whose very existence was threatened. Love for the peace they were denied. It was love that can work miracles, that can move mountains,” the diplomat said.

The Belarusian diplomat praised the movie saying it was one of the best films about the Great Patriotic War made recently. “I am happy that the Belarusian and Russian filmmakers have managed to pull the soul strings and made many open their eyes and hearts to what happened at that time,” said the diplomat.

The movie was in Russian with English subtitles. After the screening, the guests attended a reception. In an interview with Russian journalists Andrei Dapkiunas thanked those who responded to the invitation.

Brest Fortress was the second film about the Great Patriotic War screened at the UN headquarters as part of the series of the events to mark the 70th anniversary of the Victory. Leonid Bykov’s Only Old Men Are Going Into Battle was shown in February. The main events are scheduled for early May when the UN headquarters will host a commemorative meeting of the General Assembly and a concert.
