World Bank representatives to visit Belarus soon

MINSK, 18 April (BelTA) – Representatives of the World Bank leadership plan to visit Belarus in the nearest future, aide to the President of Belarus, head of the main economic department of the Presidential Administration Kirill Rudy said in an interview to the Russian broadcasting service Voice of America during the annual spring meetings of the Boards of Governors of the World Bank Group and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington, aired by the Belarus One TV channel, BelTA has learned.

“At this year’s annual spring meetings the Belarusian delegation consists of representatives of the National Bank, the Economy Ministry, the Presidential Administration, the Development Bank of Belarus. We have come to Washington to compare notes. Talks have already been held with the World Bank leadership. It was an optimistic dialogue. We agreed to continue cooperation. Representatives of the World Bank expressed their intention to visit Belarus in the near future, perhaps in a month’s time,” he said.

According to Kirill Rudy, two vice presidents of the bank are expected to visit Belarus.

“In Belarus we speak less and do more. In particular, a decree to increase the pension age has already been signed. Utility tariffs have been raised. Prices have been liberalized. In fact the most difficult reforms have already been launched,” Kirill Rudy said.

The aide to the President of Belarus noted that Belarus’ economic planning model became a mobilizing factor at some certain stage that gave an additional impetus to development. “We are currently facing certain difficulties, but it is not the only factor. It is understood that the changed situation on raw material markets and in the region has been affecting us. We are an open economy, and the difficulties of our main trade partners cannot but affect us. It is a whole set of both structural and regional external factors that have met at one place and at one time. The IMF, however, forecasts gradual recovery of our economy in 2017,” said Kirill Rudy.

Kirill Rudy’s book entitled Financial Diet was presented during the annual spring meetings of the Boards of Governors of the World Bank Group and the International Monetary Fund.
