MINSK, 17 March (BelTA) – The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) intends to participate in the promotion of the Belarusian integration of integrations initiative. The intention was mentioned during the latest meeting of Belarus’ Permanent Representative to the UN Office and other international organizations in Geneva Yuri Ambrazevich and UNCTAD Director General Mukhisa Kituyi, the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs told BelTA.
Yuri Ambrazevich and Mukhisa Kituyi discussed the state and prospects of Belarus-UNCTAD cooperation, UNCTAD’s participation in promoting the integration of integrations initiative the Belarus president had suggested. Among other things the possibility of UNCTAD hosting an international conference involving heads of regional and subregional economic integration formations was mentioned.
Yuri Ambrazevich informed Mukhisa Kituyi in detail about the international conference that took place in Minsk in October 2016 under the aegis of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to discuss economic integration. Yuri Ambrazevich also described plans to promote the compatibility theme in Greater Europe during Belarus’ presidency in the Central European Initiative (CEI).
The UNCTAD Secretary General backed Belarus’ efforts to actively promote the agenda of practical economic cooperation between regional and subregional economic associations. Mukhisa Kituyi said he was confident that economic ties and mutual dependence represent a factor, which is crucial to political stability and to the resolution of any political conflicts.
Established in 1964 as a permanent intergovernmental body, UNCTAD is a key agency of the UN General Assembly in matters relating to trade and development.
