Plans to implement chemical safety project in Belarus, Ukraine

MINSK, 26 October (BelTA) – A project in the area of chemical safety will be implemented in Belarus and Ukraine, BelTA learned from Elizabet Paunovic, Head of the World Health Organization European Center for Environment and Health (WHO/ECEH).

Elizabet Paunovic said: “We are going to launch a project involving Belarus and Ukraine. It is a project in the area of chemical safety.”

Irina Zastenskaya, a WHO/ECEH technical officer for chemical safety, explained that the project will involve creating a network of experts to take care of chemical safety in Belarus and Ukraine under the WHO aegis. Plans have been made to analyze the situation with the population morbidity rate, environmental pollution, and products involving chemicals. The project is supposed to begin in December but the main action will start in January. The project will last for one year. The national applied science center for medical technologies, informatization, management and healthcare economy and the applied science center for hygiene will be the agencies to implement the project in Belarus.

An international science and practice conference is scheduled to take place in Minsk on 26-28 October. Top officials of the Federal Medical and Biological Agency of Russia, the World Health Organization European Center for Environment and Health (WHO/ECEH), leading hygiene researchers from Russia, Latvia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Germany, Italy, and Moldova are taking part in the conference.

The conference is timed to the 90th anniversary since the applied science center for hygiene was established in Belarus. Today the center is a well-developed organization with a high scientific potential and modern physical infrastructure. Its specialists study various environmental factors to evaluate their effect on human health. The specialists work out healthcare recommendations. The sanitary norms and rules they have developed, their hygiene standards and methods for studying environmental factors represent the foundation of hygiene regulations in Belarus. The expertise of the center’s specialists has been recognized abroad. Many of the specialists work as international experts and represent Belarus in international organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and other ones.

Director of the applied science center for hygiene Sergei Sychik noted that preventive healthcare specialists have to do more and more work every day. “We live in an age of ever changing conditions due to the advance of new technologies, the growing role of global environmental processes, the emergence of new evidence pointing to the unfavorable effects that the already researched environmental factors have and the effects a combination of such factors has,” he noted.
