Packed agenda for CSTO summit in Minsk

MOSCOW, 28 November (BelTA) – The Collective Security Council of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) will consider more than 20 issues during its session in Minsk on 30 November, CSTO spokesman Vladimir Zainetdinov told BelTA.

The Collective Security Council comprises the heads of state of Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, and Tajikistan. In 2016-2017 Chairman of the Collective Security Council of the Collective Security Treaty Organization is Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko. The Collective Security Council meeting will be held in a restricted format and as a plenary session. Attending the meeting will be CSTO Secretary General Yuri Khachaturov.

“The heads of state will discuss the development trends of the international situation and the measures taken to strengthen the collective security of the CSTO. The heads of state are expected to adopt the CSTO Declaration on the 25th anniversary of the Collective Security Treaty and the 15th anniversary of the Collective Security Treaty Organization,” the spokesman said.

The presidents will consider the draft decision on the implementation of the collective security strategy of the Collective Security Treaty Organization through 2025.

In 2017-2018 Kazakhstan will preside in the CSTO. Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev will lay out Kazakhstan’s priorities for the period of its presidency in the organization.

“The agenda of the session includes a number of policy statements by the heads of CSTO member states on current issues of international security,” the spokesman added.

CSTO Secretary General Yuri Khachaturov will make a report on the CSTO performance in 2016-2017 and on the status of implementation of the decisions taken at the previous session of the Collective Security Council.

The meeting will talk over the ways of improving the military component of the organization, the structure of the CSTO Secretariat and the Joint Staff, distribution of quotas for the posts in the Joint Staff, the 2018 CSTO budget.

Plans have been made to sign the documents on cooperation in information security and on the measures to combat illegal migration, the CSTO Collective Security Council resolutions on the emblem and the flag of the organization, the heraldic sign of the forces and means of collective security.

The session will be preceded by a joint meeting of the CSTO Council of Foreign Ministers, the Council of Defense Ministers and the Committee of Secretaries of the Security Councils. The meeting will discuss the draft agenda of the forthcoming meeting of the CSTO Collective Security Council and the documents to be submitted for the session of the CSTO Collective Security Council.
