New Belarus-Russian Union State program to prevent Chernobyl-related diseases

MOSCOW, 2 February (BelTA) – A new program of the Belarus-Russia Union State will mitigate the risk of emerging Chernobyl-related diseases, the Union State Standing Committee told BelTA following an online meeting of the working group on drafting the fifth Belarus-Russia Union State program on the protection of population and rehabilitation of Chernobyl-affected territories.

“The new program is designed to minimize the impact of the Chernobyl accident on the Belarusian and Russian border areas with high-level radioactive contamination. The document is meant to make more progress in mitigating the consequences of Chernobyl, reduce radiation levels, minimize the risk of emerging Chernobyl-related diseases, raise the quality of medical services, and ensure safe living conditions in the affected areas,” the Standing Committee noted.

Taking into account the remarks of Russia’s Finance Ministry, the working group decided to revise some scheduled measures, specify how much money will be allocated for the program from the Union State budget, and update the draft concept of the program. The group also set the deadlines for the tasks.

The High-Level Group of the Union State Council of Ministers met on 17 November 2017 to discuss the new program to mitigate the consequences of Chernobyl as this is one of the top-priority fields of the Union State development. The group acknowledged the social significance and importance of the program. In this regard, the emergencies ministries of Belarus and Russia were instructed to submit a draft concept of the program to the Union State Council of Ministers.
