Minsk to host expert meeting on labor migration 6-7 May

MINSK, 5 May (BelTA) – The meeting on practical aspects of admission and control of migrant workers will gather experts of the Eastern Partnership Panel on Migration and Asylum in Minsk on 6 to 7 May, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Interior Ministry.

“Partaking in the meeting will be representatives of the countries-members of the panel that include the EU and Easter Partnership states, and also international and private organizations,” the press service noted.

The delegation of the Belarusian Interior Ministry will be headed by Deputy Interior Minister Nikolai Melchenko. The forum has been organized on the initiative of the Directorate-General for Home Affairs of the European Commission with the assistance of the Interior Ministries of Belarus and Latvia and the Swedish Migration Agency.

The Belarusian ministry added that the participants of the meeting will discuss the protection of the rights and interests of citizens who leave their country to work abroad. “They will exchange information on the procedural aspects of admission of all categories of migrant workers in the Eastern Partnership countries. They will also talk over the cooperation between public and private institutions in the recruitment of labor force. The experts will pay attention to the problems of and solutions to illegal employment of migrant workers,” the Belarusian Interior Ministry noted.

The ministry pointed out that Belarus takes an active part in the development of annual programs of the panel, which allows it to strengthen the cooperation ties with the ministries and agencies of the EU and Eastern Partnership countries, gain practical experience, and learn about the latest changes to the migration regulations in the Eastern Partnership states.

The Interior Ministry explained that the Panel on Migration and Asylum was established in 2011. Its main goal is to strengthen the potential of the migration and asylum systems in the Eastern Partnership countries. It is also expected to promote dialogue on migration and asylum between the countries of the Eastern Partnership and the European Union.
