Minsk gearing up for OSCE conference on combating terrorism in digital age in October

MINSK, 20 July (BelTA) – Participation of the UN Counter-Terrorism Committee in an OSCE-wide conference on combating terrorism in digital age due in Minsk on 9-10 October was discussed during a meeting between Belarus’ Permanent Representative to the UN Valentin Rybakov and Michele Coninsx, Assistant Secretary-General, Executive Director of the UN Counter-Terrorism Executive Directorate (CTED), BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The parties discussed the promising areas of cooperation between Belarus and the UN in the fight against terrorism. They also welcomed the positive experience of cooperation between Belarus and the CTC, including in part of holding a joint side event on countering terrorism in cyberspace on the margins of the United Nations High-level Conference of Heads of Counter-Terrorism Agencies of Member States held on 28-29 June 2018.

Consideration was given to the CTC review of Belarus' implementation of UN Security Council resolutions on countering terrorism and the committee's recommendations.

The UN Counter-Terrorism Committee (CTC) was established in the wake of the terrorist acts in the United States on 11 September 2001. The CTC consists of 15 Member States of the UN Security Council and monitors compliance with Security Council resolutions in the field of combating terrorism. In its activities, the CTC relies on the Executive Directorate which implements strategic decisions and conducts expert assessments of the situation in the UN Member States.
