Makei pays condolences at French Embassy in Belarus
MINSK, 9 January (BelTA) – Belarus’ Foreign Minister Vladimir Makei visited the French Embassy in Belarus and signed a condolence book for those killed in the terrorist attack on the offices of Charlie Hebdo magazine that took place in Paris on 7 January 2015, BelTA learned from the Belarusian Foreign Ministry.The minister’s note reads that Belarus resolutely condemns the barbaric act of terror and any manifestations of terrorism and extremism that claim lives of civilians.
The attack on Charlie Hebdo editorial office was perpetrated by three terrorists armed with Kalashnikov assault rifles and a rocket launcher. The gunmen burst into the building and sprayed it with gunfire, killing 10 journalists and two police officers. Another 11 people were wounded, including four in critical condition.
French police released photographs of the two brothers suspected of being the perpetrators of the attack. Agence France-Presse reported that one of the suspects surrendered.
Over 100,000 people took to the streets in France on 7 January to protest the killings. In Paris people gathered at the Place de la Republique (Republic square) near the offices of French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo.
Rallies also unfolded in Rennes, Toulouse, Lyon, Lille, and Marseille among other French cities.
The tragedy in Paris stirred a sharp reaction in the world. The international community unanimously condemned the terrorist attack.
