Makei meets with colleagues from Ireland, Sweden, Venezuela, Pakistan, USA in New York

MINSK, 22 September (BelTA) – Belarus’ Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei met with the colleagues from a number of countries on the sidelines of the 72nd session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, BelTA learned from the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The meeting with Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade of Ireland Simon Coveney focused on the intensification of the trade and economic relations, interaction between Belarus and the European Union, cooperation in international organizations. The sides paid special attention to the implementation of Irish investment projects in Belarus. Vladimir Makei praised a big role of Ireland in helping Belarus to mitigate the consequences of the Chernobyl accident. The diplomats mentioned a mutual interest in the development of cooperation between the business circles of the two countries.

The expansion of interaction, including in the format of the Eastern Partnership Initiative, was in the spotlight during the meeting with Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sweden Margot Wallstrom. The Belarusian diplomat spoke about the approaches of the country’s government to the development of small and medium-sized enterprises. Margot Wallstrom expressed confidence that Swedish businessmen are interested in the long-term investment in Belarus. The parties agreed that the resumption of work of the Belarusian embassy in Sweden helps raise the efficiency of the dialogue between the countries. They also harmonized a plan of joint events for the near future. Besides, Vladimir Makei and Margot Wallstrom shared opinions on human rights issues.

At the meeting with Minister of Foreign Affairs of Venezuela Jorge Arreaza the sides reaffirmed mutual interest in expanding cooperation and mentioned the need to make an inventory of previous top-level agreements. The Belarusian and Venezuelan ministers discussed the schedule of future contacts at the high and highest levels.

The meeting with Minister of Foreign Affairs of Pakistan Khawaja Muhammad Asif highlighted the need to preserve the high dynamics of the trade and economic interaction between the two states. The sides discussed the situation in the regions and agreed to plan out bilateral events for the near future.

The meeting of Vladimir Makei with Elisabeth Millard, Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs (Acting), focused on a wide range of topical issues of the Belarusian-U.S. cooperation. The sides pointed out the importance to continue the process of normalizing bilateral relations and working out corresponding steps. The diplomats shared opinions on the priority issues on the international and regional agendas.

On the sidelines of the session of the United Nations General Assembly the Belarusian minister of foreign affairs met with representatives of international organizations, heads of foreign policy agencies of a number of UN member states.
