Makei: EaP should reconcile its goals with interests of member states

MINSK, 22 June (BelTA) – The objectives of the Eastern Partnership Initiative should be reconciled with the needs and interests of its member states, Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei told a press conference following the informal ministerial meeting of the Eastern Partnership member states, BelTA has learned.

“We have just concluded a plenary session of the foreign ministry segment of the 10th round of informal ministerial dialogues of the Eastern Partnership. Taking part in it were representatives of foreign ministries of six partners states, Commissioner for European Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn and Deputy Secretary General for Political Affairs of the European External Action Service Jean-Christophe Belliard. We have had an open and constructive exchange of views on the prospects of the Eastern Partnership taking into account regional developments and the results of the summit in Brussels in 2017,” Vladimir Makei said.

In his words, the today’s meeting focused on implementing the Eastern Partnership deliverables for 2020 that had been agreed upon at the summit. The participants also discussed ways to make partnership more efficient and to reconcile the EaP with the needs and interests of the partner states.

The heads of the delegations spoke in favor of the cooperation forms that can generate tangible social and economic benefits for the Eastern Partnership countries and the European Union.

“There was obvious understanding of the need to strengthen the multilateral format of the Eastern Partnership Initiative based on projects and programs that are relevant and important for all the partner states. A special emphasis was made on new instruments of providing financial support for such projects. We discussed operation prospects of the European Fund for Sustainable Development set up by the European Union as well as the European Commission’s proposals to dramatically increase the EU’s financial assistance for promoting relations with the neighborhood states in 2021-2027.
