Improvement of Belarus’ judicial system on agenda of forthcoming government conference

MINSK, 8 May (BelTA) - Improvement of Belarus’ judicial system and the quality of justice will be discussed at a meeting to be held by Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko after 1 July, Chairman of the Supreme Court Valentin Sukalo told the media after the meeting with the head of state on 8 May, BelTA has learned.

“The forthcoming meeting of the head of state with representatives of the judicial system was raised during today’s meeting. The inspection is currently underway. After 1 July the president will meet with representatives of the courts of all levels,” Valentin Sukalo said.

According to him, the upcoming event will focus on the ways of improving the judicial system and the quality of justice. “We will outline the tasks that we have to address to improve the entire judicial system, make it more efficient,” Valentin Sukalo noted.

During the meeting Alexander Lukashenko asked to update him on some high-profile criminal cases in which he kept track of the quality of preliminary investigation. “With regard to the quality of the preliminary investigation, we we always want it to be better. Yet, I cannot say that there have been any dramatic failures or serious mishandlings in preliminary investigations,” Valentin Sukalo noted.

In his words, with the establishment of the Investigation Committee and the State Forensic Examination Committee the quality of preliminary investigation has improved considerably. “These two bodies set up as part of the judicial reform made a positive impact on the quality of justice,” the Supreme Court chairman said.
