Construction of Belarusian nuclear power plant stays on schedule

MINSK, 19 April (BelTA) – The construction of the Belarusian nuclear power plant proceeds on schedule, BelTA learned from Chairman of the State Control Committee of Belarus Leonid Anfimov prior to the joint session of the boards of the Committee and the Accounts Chamber of Russia on 19 April. The session was arranged as a video conference.

In Q1 2018 the State Control Committee and the Accounts Chamber of Russia worked together to check whether the parties to the Belarusian-Russian intergovernmental agreement on cooperation in building a nuclear power plant in Belarus had properly honored their commitments. The joint inspection verified that the commitments are honored on the whole, the project is financed on time and in full. Over $3 billion worth of work has been done, including $2.7 billion as credit resources.

Leonid Anfimov said: “Construction proceeds in line with the approved schedule. There are no disruptions, which may cause serious complaints on the part of the Belarusian and Russian sides. The head of state wants the most up-to-date, safest, and most technologically advanced nuclear power plant built in Belarus. Oversight efforts are designed to forestall the development of negative situations so that the power plant could indeed become safest and most up-to-date without causing complaints on the part of our citizens or our neighbors.”

In his words, the State Control Committee has no doubts that the facility will be commissioned in line with the deadlines set by the relevant documents. A working conference with representatives of Rosatom Corporation had taken place the day before. The general contractor assured that it would do its best to complete the work on time.

The active phase of construction of the Belarusian nuclear power plant began in 2013. Work is now in progress at 123 installations. As many as 41 civil engineering subcontractors are employed, including 23 Belarusian ones. The relevant government agencies constantly monitor the quality of work and the observance of technologies.

The Belarusian-Russian intergovernmental agreement provides for collaboration of the two countries in designing, building, and commissioning two power-generating units of the nuclear power plant with the output capacity of up to 1,200MW each in addition to designing, building, and commissioning auxiliary facilities, which the safe operation of each unit requires. The first power-generating unit is scheduled for commissioning in December 2019, with the second one to go online in July 2020.
