Better living standards for Chernobyl-affected areas in Belarus

MINSK, 22 April (BelTA) – It is necessary to greatly improve living standards in Chernobyl-affected areas. Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko made the relevant statement after his address to the nation and the parliament on 22 April, BelTA has learned.

“We will slightly adjust our policy for overcoming consequences of the Chernobyl disaster,” said the head of state. He remarked that Mogilev Oblast will be demonstrative in this regard.

Alexander Lukashenko reminded that several years ago he instructed the Mogilev Oblast Governor to think about the complex development of the territories in the region while paying close attention to the southeast. “The situation has changed, people are pleased to move there to live, give birth and raise kids. I don’t mean the 30km alienation zone [around the Chernobyl nuclear power plant],” noted the head of state.

The President pointed out that during his traditional trip to Chernobyl-affected areas he intends to get familiar with the plans of the municipal authorities regarding the development of the territories. He said he would also like to see a concept for the development of Mogilev Oblast’s southeastern part, which is lagging behind. According to the head of state, it will be demonstrative and characteristic for other regions, too, including Gomel Oblast’s south. Alexander Lukashenko remarked that the efforts are particularly topical in view of Ukrainian events. “We don’t need tanks, weapons, and troops in those areas but normal people”. He added that it is necessary to set up enterprises and infrastructure in those lands.

“So we will take a look at those lands region-wise the way we created the Polesie development program in our time. We will act in the Chernobyl-affected lands without forgetting concrete support for peasants, agriculture, and the production sector,” said the head of state.
