Belarusian parliament sets up working group on SDGs

MINSK, 13 December (BelTA) – A working group on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) has been set up in the Belarusian parliament, BelTA learned from the press service of the Council of the Republic.

The group has been led by Chairwoman of the Council of the Republic’s standing commission on legislation and state construction Alla Bodak. Her deputy will be Deputy Chairman of the House of Representatives’ standing commission on budget and finances Valery Borodenya. “The working group will be guided by the law on the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus, regulations of the chambers of the National Assembly, and also legislative acts on Belarus’ achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals that make part of the UN General Assembly resolution of 25 September 2015 Transforming our world: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development,” the press service said.

The decision to set up a working group was taken at the meeting of the Presidium of the Council of the Republic, which was hosted by Chairman of the Council of the Republic Mikhail Myasnikovich. The meeting also considered the results of the activities of the Standing Committee on International Affairs and National Security. Chairman of the commission Sergey Rakhmanov updated the participants of the meeting on the preparation of draft laws and the efforts to strengthen inter-parliamentary relations. A number of initiatives was voiced on further development of cooperation with parliamentarians of other states, and the promotion of the image of Belarus in the international arena.

Summing up the proposals and initiatives, the chairman of the Council of the Republic drew attention to the priority tasks for the standing commissions of the Council of the Republic. They include further improvement of the regulatory framework for expanding international cooperation, increasing the effectiveness of the work of inter-parliamentary groups, strengthening interaction with government agencies in the framework of the interdepartmental commission on economic security.
