Belarusian APC Cayman to participate in Zapad 2017 exercise

MINSK, 13 September (BelTA) – Multifunctional armored personnel carriers (APC) Cayman will take part in the Belarusian-Russian strategic army exercise Zapad 2017, the press service of the State Military Industrial Committee of Belarus told BelTA.

Four Caymans with various weapon systems will be involved in the army exercise. The weapons include a large-caliber machine gun Utes and a modernized Kalashnikov machine gun for armored vehicles. The Belarusian APCs will be utilized in several episodes of the exercise in the Borisovsky exercise area.

The Cayman APCs were presented before the general public during the 8th international defense technology expo MILEX 2017. The vehicles are designed for reconnaissance and sabotage operations. The vehicle can be used for patrol missions and for escorting convoys, for peacemaking and police operations, for operations in emergencies. It is a compact vehicle and therefore boasts good maneuverability. A Cayman APC does not need roads and can cross rough terrains at speeds of about 60kmph. The vehicle can also swim as fast as 7kmph.

The modernized armored fighting vehicles (AFC) BTR-70MB will also feature in the Zapad 2017 exercise. A BTR-70MB is designed to transport personnel and lay down cover fire. The modernized vehicle boasts a new powertrain based on a KamAZ engine and effective instrumentation. The armored vehicle can be used by infantry and marines. Ten BTR-70MB vehicles have been prepared for the Belarusian-Russian strategic army exercise Zapad 2017.

The Belarusian-Russian strategic army exercise Zapad 2017 is scheduled to take place in Belarus and three army exercise areas in Russia (Luzhsky, Strugi Krasnyye, and Pravdinsky) on 14-20 September. Some 12,700 military personnel will take part in the exercise. About 10,200 personnel will be deployed in Belarus, with Belarus contributing slightly more than 7,000 people and Russia supplying about 3,000 troops. The Belarusian part of the exercise will also involve 370 armored vehicles, including about 140 combat tanks. Up to 150 artillery units and multiple-launch rocket systems, over 40 aircraft and helicopters will be deployed as well.
