Belarus urges UN members to ban new WMD kinds by consensus

MINSK, 4 October (BelTA) – A representative of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs took part in a session of the First Committee during the 72nd session of the UN General Assembly, the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs told BelTA. The First Committee deals with disarmament, global challenges and threats to peace that affect the international community and seeks out solutions to challenges in the international security regime.

According to the source, in his speech Nikolai Ovsyanko, Deputy Head of the International Security and Arms Control Office of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said that the Belarusian delegation intends to submit a draft resolution on banning new kinds of weapons of mass destruction for consideration of the First Committee. He called for adopting the resolution by consensus.

The Belarusian delegation took part in general debates of the First Committee. Belarus’ stance on the main items on the international agenda in the area of disarmament and non-proliferation was presented.
