Belarus to ratify agreement with Turkmenistan on crime prevention

MINSK, 23 October (BelTA) – Members of Belarus’ House of Representatives intend to consider ratifying a Belarus-Turkmenistan intergovernmental agreement on crime prevention during the parliament’s autumn session, BelTA learned from Vasily Chekan, member of the Permanent Commission of the House of Representatives on National Security.

The agreement was signed during the visit of Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko to Ashgabat on 30 March 2017.

“The current cooperation agreement between the interior ministries of Belarus and Turkmenistan, which was signed in Minsk back in 1993, is outdated. Some provisions need to be amended. Moreover, separate matters related to cooperation in law enforcement envisaged by the current interdepartmental document no longer fall within the scope of Belarus’ Interior Ministry,” Vasily Chekan remarked.

The new draft document is meant to expand the fields and avenues of cooperation. For instance, some of the main forms of cooperation will be requests for assistance, joint investigation work and preventive measures, exchange of information on criminal records and crimes to be committed, and also measures required to prevent them. According to the draft agreement, Belarus and Kazakhstan are to exchange operational, background, crime, and other information of mutual interest, exchange legislative and other legal information, scientific and special literature, and help each other train and re-train specialists.
