Belarus to ratify agreement on cooperation in peaceful nuclear energy with Turkey

MINSK, 23 March (BelTA) – During the spring session the Belarusian MPs are expected to ratify an intergovernmental agreement with Turkey on cooperation in the peaceful use of nuclear energy, deputy chairman of the standing commission on industry, fuel and energy complex, transport and communications Piotr Solovyov told BelTA.

According to the MPs, the agreement is of an extensive nature and provides for the development of bilateral cooperation in the fundamental and applied research and development in the peaceful use of nuclear energy. The agreement envisages the selection of sites, design, construction, operation, modernization, and maintenance of nuclear power plants, and handling of radioactive waste, Piotr Solovyov said. “The parties are expected to exchange sci-tech information during scientific seminars, conferences and symposiums, and also to exchange and train scientific personnel,” the MP said.

“The agreement will help create necessary conditions for the Belarusian-Turkish cooperation, strengthen it, and contribute to the implementation of future joint projects in the area of nuclear power,” Piotr Solovyov said.

The agreement was signed in Minsk in November 2016. The document was inked by the first deputy energy minister and the Turkish minister of energy and natural resources. Taking part in the implementation of the agreement will also be the Emergencies Ministry, the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus and the Turkish Atomic Energy Authority.
