Belarus to attend UNECE regional forum in Geneva

MINSK, 27 February (BelTA) – Belarus’ experience in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will be showcased at the Regional Forum on Sustainable Development for the UNECE Region in Geneva, BelTA learned from the press service of the Council of the Republic.

The UNECE regional forum scheduled foe 1-2 March will be attended by a Belarusian delegation led by Deputy Chairwoman of the Council of the Republic, National Coordinator for Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals Marianna Shchetkina. “She will lay out Belarus’ experience on achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and also the results of the Regional SDG Coordination Leader Forum which was held in Minsk on 21-22 February,” the press service said.

The outcome document adopted after the Minsk forum included the decisive factors to achieve sustainability. These are coordinated actions by all the partners at the national, regional and global levels and the exchange of experience between the stakeholders. The document stresses that regional integration is a driving force behind development and promotes the achievement of the SDGs. Countries of one region can get more advantages through joint work. The establishment of inter-parliamentary cooperation in the achievement of SDGs will promote experience sharing, the harmonization of the national legislations of the countries of the region, the development of common standards and norms, and the advancement of joint initiatives.

Participants in the forum expressed support for the efforts undertaken by the UN Secretary General to conduct a comprehensive reform of the United Nations development system towards greater leadership, integration and accountability. It is expected that the work of the agencies in achieving the SDGs will become more coherent, will take the national priorities into account.

As it was reported, the Regional SDG Coordination Leaders Forum in Minsk brought delegations from more than 40 countries. Participants to the forum shared the experience in achieving the SDGs and discussed the problems in fulfilling the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The dialogue will facilitate the dissemination of best practices and innovative approaches towards the SDGs, the establishment of a regional network of national SDG coordinators.
