Belarus to attend IAP Annual Conference in South Africa

MINSK, 26 April (BelTA) – Representatives of the Belarusian General Prosecutor’s Office will take part in the Annual Conference of the International Association of Prosecutors (IAP) in Johannesburg, South Africa on 9-13 September, Belarus’ Prosecutor General Alexander Konyuk told the media ahead of his meeting with IAP President Gerhard Jarosch on 26 April, BelTA has learned.

The IAP holds annual conferences, general meetings, regional conferences and forums. The latest conference took place in Beijing, China on 10-14 September 2017.

According to Alexander Konyuk, it is possible that the IAP regional conference will be held in Belarus next year. “The event will be held here for the first time. The conference will take place if the IAP takes the relevant decision,” the prosecutor general said.

The cooperation between the Belarusian Association of Prosecutors and the IAP is multipronged, the prosecutor general added. Belarusian representatives take an active part in numerous trainings and conferences. Such meetings provide an opportunity for experience exchanges.

IAP President Gerhard Jarosch, who is in Belarus on a working visit, said that crime knows no border. Therefore cooperation between prosecutors from different countries is very important. “I am very happy to be here. We have an opportunity to discuss the further development of cooperation with Belarus, and international cooperation in general. I hope that such interaction will help society to combat crime more effectively,” he said.

During the working meeting Alexander Konyuk and Gerhard Jarosch will discuss the ways of counteracting the organized crime, corruption, enhancing the effectiveness of international cooperation in criminal matters, and also the development of legislation, the promotion of professional interests of the prosecutorial corps.

The International Association of Prosecutors (IAP) is a non-governmental and non-political organization. Now it has more than 172 organizational members from over 171 different countries, representing every continent, as well as many individual members. Its objectives includes: to promote the effective, fair, impartial and efficient prosecution of criminal offences; to promote high standards and principles in the administration of criminal justice; to assist prosecutors internationally in the fight against organized or other serious crime. “We have prepared a large number of educational materials which are available both online and in print,” said Gerhard Jarosch. “We have an extensive network of prosecutors around the world. So if a prosecutor in Belarus needs assistance, for example, of a colleague in Canada, we, using the IAP network, will be able to find a person in Canada who can help,” he noted.
