Belarus president meeting informally with CIS leadersMOSCOW, 26 December (BelTA) – Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko is taking part in an informal meeting of the CIS heads of state in the Novo-Ogaryovo residence of the Russian president near Moscow, BelTA has learned.

Taking part in the meeting are also the presidents of Azerbaijan, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.

Opening the meeting, President of Russia Vladimir Putin suggested summing up results achieved by the Commonwealth of Independent States in 2017. He also suggested sketching out future plans and discussing topical items on the regional agenda and the international one.

Vladimir Putin remarked that during its CIS presidency Russia had primarily focused on developing integration processes in the Eurasian space and on bolstering international respect for the CIS. As a priority Vladimir Putin mentioned the dismantling of trade barriers.

Informal meeting of the CIS heads of stateIn January-September 2017 the CIS trade rose by 24% to reach $117 billion. “Work to enable free trade in services in the CIS is nearing completion,” said Vladimir Putin. Besides, the CIS member states stepped up cooperation in fight against terrorism, drugs trafficking, organized crime, and took humanitarian cooperation to the next stage.

According to the Russian president, all the CIS states are in favor of forming a fair world order, with the United Nations Organization playing the key role in the process. “A stronger Commonwealth of Independent States meets modern aspirations of our nations,” said Vladimir Putin.
