Alexander Lukashenko remarked: “People are still concerned [about rising prices]. But I am confident that if we manage to keep inflation as it is this year and the next one, then people will forget about this problem.” The president said it is possible that inflation may be way below the expected figure at the end of the year. The head of state underlined that plummeting prices negatively affect the economy just like skyrocketing prices do. “This is why if prices are to rise, the rise has to be smooth and low. If prices are to drop, it has to be smooth and slow. I wish inflation in Belarus could be at 3-4% at the end of the year,” he said.

Alexander Lukashenko also noted that prices are dropping in the entire region — Russia and Ukraine. “When prices do not rise, the situation benefits both people and producers. Producers get used to it. They start tweaking prime costs and reach normal profitability,” said the head of state.
