Belarus President approves amendments to electoral legislation

MINSK, 11 January (BelTA) – President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko signed addenda and amendments to some laws on elections and referendums, BelTA learnt from the presidential press service.

The amendments to the electoral legislation offer a new approach to the formation of election commissions, simplify nomination and registration of presidential candidates and candidates to deputies, and ease rules regarding the organization of election campaigns.

According to the new law, the election commissions (except for the Central Election Commission) will be composed of representatives of political parties and other non-governmental organizations by at least one third.

The procedure of nominating candidates is simplified. Political parties will be able to nominate candidates in all constituencies regardless of the presence of their offices there. According to the new law, the candidates will be allowed to set up individual election funds having ensured a tough control over fund raising and use. The minimum turnout requirement to recognize elections to local councils is abolished.
