Belarus, Ireland discuss cooperation on Chernobyl

MINSK, 27 April (BelTA) – Sergei Aleinik, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Belarus to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland with concurrent accreditation to the Republic of Ireland, met with Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Ireland Charles Flanagan during his trip to Dublin on 26 April, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The parties exchanged the letters of greetings from the ministers of foreign affairs of Belarus and Ireland as the two countries celebrate 25 years of diplomatic relations, marked on 17 April. The parties also talked over the issues of bilateral cooperation in various areas, and also the interaction between Belarus and the European Union.

Keeping in mind 26 April observed by the UN as International Chernobyl Disaster Remembrance Day, the parties attached close attention to Belarus-Ireland cooperation in mitigating the consequences of the Chernobyl nuclear accident. Ireland is one of the world’s most active participants in rendering assistance to the countries hit by the Chernobyl disaster.
