Belarus, Georgia discuss cooperation prospects

MINSK, 2 February (BelTA) – Belarus and Georgia acknowledge great potential in promoting the bilateral cooperation across various walks of life, in particular, in agriculture. The matter was discussed at the session of the Belarus-Georgia intergovernmental commission for economic cooperation on 2 February. The session was attended by Agriculture and Food Minister of Belarus Leonid Zayats and Agriculture Minister of Georgia Otar Danelia, BelTA has learned.

Leonid Zayats noted that the bilateral trade lags behind its true potential; therefore, Belarus and Georgia need to step up efforts in this field.

“Belarus can do much more. This is why we will make the most of our legislation to promote the interests of our state on the food market of Georgia,” Leonid Zayats said.

The Agriculture and Food Minister of Belarus noted that the parties are going to build their relations in a way that will benefit the interests of the both states. The instruments to facilitate the bilateral cooperation include export lending, subsidized interest rates on loans taken by non-resident companies of Belarus, international leasing, promotion of Belarusian products within the framework of Georgia’s government programs. According to Leonid Zayats, there are more mechanisms that can be used to ramp up the bilateral cooperation.

He voiced interest in expanding the range of Belarusian products, especially meat and dairy products, available on the market of Georgia. Leonid Zayats noted that a number of domestic companies are accredited to sell their products in the EU member states and have the Halal certificate to supply their foods to Muslim states.

Besides the export of foodstuffs, Belarus would like to sell its farm machines to Georgia and intensify cooperation in providing technical maintenance services to Belarusian machinery operated there.

Leonid Zayats noted that products from Georgia are also welcome in Belarus.

Agriculture Minister of Georgia Otar Danelia believes that the meeting in Minsk will mark the start of a new stage in the bilateral cooperation. He expressed confidence that cooperation with Belarus will be fruitful. “I think that we are well positioned to promote our cooperation not only in agriculture, but also in other sectors,” he said.

The session of the Belarus-Georgia intergovernmental commission for economic cooperation is taking place in Minsk as part of the working visit of Georgia’s governmental delegation led by the Agriculture Minister. The delegation is set to discuss a 13-point agenda, including cooperation in agribusiness, manufacturing, transport and construction, interregional contacts, and the legal framework of the cooperation.

The discussion is expected to result in specific actions to promote the bilateral ties.
